Abstract
Lebanon, a small country in the Middle East, has had a long history of natural disasters, especially earthquakes. The earthquake
of July 9, year 551 AD destroyed the capital city Beirut. The two consecutive earthquakes of February 2023, which originated
in Turkey terrorized the Lebanese citizens. Although no actual harm occurred, these earthquake events were important in what
they caused mentally and socially to the young and the old.
They raised awareness and preparedness in the community that was not seen before, specifically in the youth. They showed
Lebanese social connectedness and responsibility towards their community, as well as the spirit of volunteerism and risking
one’s own safety to help others in need.
In this paper, we will discuss Lebanon’s history with earthquakes, its seismic activity and risk, and how the Lebanese population
reacted to the frightening ground shaking.
